The main opposition United National Party (UNP) questioned in Parliament today if the process by the Supreme Court to determine if President Mahinda Rajapaksa can contest for a third term or not will be transparent or secret.
UNP MP Eran Wickremeratne urged Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa to inform Parliament on the process to be carried out since that question cannot be posed to the Court by an MP directly.
“I have a right to ask this from Parliament,” the UNP MP said when he was told he was deviating from the topic being discussed in Parliament today related to the 2015 budget.
The President has sought the opinion of the Supreme Court on if he can contest for a third term in office and for that opinion to be delivered on or before 10th November 2014.
The Supreme Court had today told members of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) that they can make submissions to the court Registrar before Friday mid-afternoon on if the President can contest for a third term under local laws.
Accordingly the SC Registrar has told the BASL they can make written submissions on the issue to the Registrar before 3pm on Friday. (Colombo Gazette)
