Students attached to the Jaffna university were informed today that the university will be closed from May 16 to May 21 but no reason was given. The university administration also informed students staying in the hostel to leave before May 16 and return on May 20, a day before academic activities resume.
The Jaffna media said that the closing of the university was timed with the annual remembrance of what is now known as the “Mullivaikal massacre” where more than 40,000 Tamil Civilians were believed to have been killed during the final battle against the LTTE.
The army also holds celebrations on May 18 to mark the defeat of the LTTE and killing of Tamil Civilians following 30 years of war. There are fears Jaffna university students may attempt to raise the LTTE flag during the May 18 week.
