‘Sri Lanka has not implemented death penalty since 1976’

Northern Province Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran, currently in Chennai, said he had explained this to the families of the five Tamil fishermen awarded the sentence by a Colombo court recently.

India pushes presidential pardon for fishermen

India wants Sri Lanka to take a “political” rather than a “legalistic” view of the case of the five Indian fishermen sentenced to death by a court in that country, sources said.

India is making a strong diplomatic push for a presidential pardon of the five Indian fishermen who were recently sentenced to death by the Colombo High Court, The Hindu has learnt.
