Those joining Foreign Service should know karate – UNP

DrCN Receiving Credentials from PresidentUNP Kandy District MP Lakshman Kiriella yesterday lambasted the government for what he called rapid deterioration of Sri Lanka’s Foreign Service which, he said, had hit the rock bottom.

MP Kiriella was participating in the committee stage debate on Budget 2015 under the expenditure heads of the Ministry of External Affairs. He alleged that political interference had ruined the Foreign Service which had once received accolades from the international community for its efficiency and professionalism.

Referring to a recent incident involving Sri Lanka’s former High Commissioner in the UK Dr Chris Nonis and Monitoring MP for the Ministry of External Affairs Sajin Vass Gunawardena, MP Kiriella said: “Time was when those who applied for joining for the Foreign was asked whether they were proficient in international languages. Now, we have to ask them whether the candidates knew martial arts. We would have to inquire them whether they are well versed in Judo or Karate.”

Recalling the circumstances under which Dr. Nonis had been assaulted in New York MP Kiriella faulted the Ministry of External Affairs for failing to conduct a proper investigation into the incident. “We blame the diplomat, too. He should have made a complaint to the New York police. It seemed that he expected justice here,” the MP added.
