Modi govt betrayed Tamils by showing indulgence to Sri Lanka: Vaiko

vaikoCHENNAI: Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) leader Vaiko on Monday came down heavily on the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre for its proximity to the Mahinda Rajapaksa dispensation in Sri Lanka.

The MDMK was a pre-poll partner of the NDA.

Talking to reporters after a sedition case hearing at a Chennai court on Monday, Vaiko cautioned the government that it was betraying Tamils by showing indulgence to the island nation.

Instead of bringing Sri Lanka to book by forcing it to face trial for its war crimes and atrocities against Tamils, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had invited Rajapaksa for the swearing-in ceremony and then engaged secret intermediaries to maintain contacts with Sri Lanka, Vaiko alleged.

Vaiko said though he was a pre-poll NDA ally, he would not desist from criticizing the Modi government whenever it committed any mistake.

Asked about actor Rajinikanth’s interest in politics, Vaiko said he would not talk about it.

The sedition case, registered by the DMK government in 2008, is being heard by the V additional sessions court here. Further hearing was adjourned to December 11.
