Maithri cannot make Ranil PM

Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Western Provincial Councillor, K. D. Lal Kantha said, even if the common Opposition candidate, Maithripala Sirisena, is elected the Executive President, he has no powers to appoint United National Party (UNP) Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe as the Prime Minister.

“That powers lies with Parliament,” Lal Kantha said adding the JVP will not field a candidate in the coming Presidential Election, as it would give it legitimacy for Rajapaksa’s contest.
“We don’t want to take part in this farce. But we are committed to bringing an end to the Rajapaksa Government at the upcoming election,” he said.

The Western Provincial Councillor said the party could not vouch for anyone. “I can only guarantee what the JVP can do. We have seen others promise that they will abolish the Executive Presidency, but they have gone back on their word. So this time we are creating a people’s movement that can guarantee that the promises of candidates are kept,” he said.
