Only the Rajapaksa govt. capable of abolishing ex. presidency – Dilan
Only the UPFA government could abolish the executive president as it had a two-thirds majority in Parliament, Foreign Employment Promotion and Welfare Minister Dilan Perera said yesterday.
Addressing the media yesterday at the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) headquarters, Minister Perera said that Maithripala Sirisena couldn’t abolish the executive presidency. Minister Perera stressed that though the Mahinda Chinthana had pledged to abolish the Executive Presidency, it was not the biggest issue people were faced with. The government was ready to abolish executive presidency but it must do in a systematic and people friendly way and not according to the whims and fancies of some bankrupt Opposition politicians, he said.
President Rajapaksa announces an end to the Executive Presidency before 2020 (Next Election)
When all international challenges, the LTTE threat and the threat of separatism ends, President Mahinda Rajapaksa will himself declare that he is the last Executive President of Sri Lanka, SLFP Treasurer and Youth Affairs and Skills Development Minister Dullas Alahapperuma told the Daily News yesterday.
Minister Alahapperuma said the day President Rajapaksa announces an end to the Executive Presidency will come definitely before 2020 (2015-2020). Till then “Sri Lanka will go forward and thrive with the Executive Presidency and defeat all existing challenges in the next few years,” he said.
Attacks on UNP activists: Opposition lambastes police inaction
The UNP yesterday expressed its displeasure at the delay on the part of the police to arrest anyone in connection with the shooting incident in Maggona on Friday though it had been recorded in a CCTV camera and photographed by a foreigner.
Chairman of the UNP leadership Council Karu Jayasuriya said that they were not happy with police investigations into the incidents at Maggona and Mawathagama on the same evening. Government sponsored thugs had shot and assaulted opposition supporters celebrating former Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena’s defection from the government and to stand for president at the forthcoming election. Former UNP member of the Beruwela Chamila Ranasinghe, who was critically injured, is being treated in the Intensive Care Unit of the National Hospital.
Jayasuriya said that the UPFA had started unleashing violence even before the day of nominations. “We have to expect more violence closer to the election date.”
The Gampaha District MP said that IGP N. K. Ilangakoon had stopped illegal transfers of more than 10,000 policemen during an election period recently, but some police officers in uniform had been seen at the opening of UPFA offices. Jayasuriya asked IGP to stop such acts too to stop engaging police officers in UPFA campaign.
