Election ‘terror’ in Kolonnawa?

UPFA Parliamentarian and party organizer for Kolonnawa Duminda Silva scoffed at claims made by supporters of Maithripala Sirisena to the effect that ‘terror stalks the electorate’.  He was responding to allegations made by recent defector to the Opposition camp and former Chairman, Kotkawatte-Mulleriyawa Pradeshiya Sabha Prasanna Solangaarachchi.

Prasanna Solangaarachchi told reporters in Colombo a few days ago that armed groups were roaming Kotikawatte and Mulleriyawa areas every night in Defenders and the lives of opposition’s activists are under threat. Sollangaarachchi is known to be a staunch supporter of Hirunika Premachandra’s father, the late Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra.

With Western Provincial Councilor Hirunika Premachandra leaving the country citing “security reasons” and Solangaarachchi claiming there is a plot to assassinate him, the Opposition alleges there is a state of “terror” in Kolonnawa – which is unleashed by ruling party politicians.

The Nation that the Provincial Councilor Hirunika and her mother are presently in Singapore. She is expected to return to the country in a few days to join the campaign of the common opposition.

Solangaarachchi said that the government should take full responsibility if someone killed him during the election period.

Duminda Silva scoffed at allegations made by Solangaarachchi, describing them as ‘ludicrous’. Silva said Solangaarachchi was ‘not important enough’ for anyone to assassinate.

“There is absolutely no truth to allegations of Kolonnawa being under a reign of terror. On the contrary, people who were with him have all converged around us. These are allegations made by individuals who can see defeat on the horizon,” Silva said.
Silva further claimed that Solangaarachchi, knowing defeat was inevitable, had already purchased an air ticket to fly out of the country.

When contacted, Police Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said they hadn’t sufficient evidence thus far to conclusively say whether or not Solangaarachchi was being hunted by armed individuals. However, SSP Rohana said the former Chairman had also contacted him over the phone and informed him of his concerns. In addition, the OIC of the Mulleriyawa police had also been contacted regarding the allegations, the SSP said.

Asked if police protection had been provided to Solangaarachchi, SSP Rohana replied in the negative. However, police were taking the claims seriously and were investigating the matter, he emphasized.

Speaking further, the police spokesman said there was definitely no truth to claims that underworld figures were operating around Kollannawa and Mulleriyawa. Most of the underworld had been eradicated by police during the past several years, he added.
