SLMC seeks unity with the TNA

slmc and tnaThe Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) today invited the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) to form a national unity government in the Eastern Provincial Council (EPC).

SLMC leader Rauff Hakeem said that at a time when President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe are looking to work together in a national unity government, the SLMC would like to set an example by forming a similar government at provincial level.

He said that while the TNA has been invited to be part of the EPC government by accepting portfolios in the Council, the United National Party has also been invited and they have said they will consider the offer.

The TNA has been at odds with the SLMC on the EPC, demanding that they should have the right to appoint the Chief Minister and govern the Council.

However last week SLMC member Nazeer Ahamed took oaths as the Chief Minister of the EPC and Hakeem said this was part of the agreement reached with President Maithripala Sirisena in order to support him at the recent polls.

Hakeem said that when there is unity within the Government it would be good to take that forward by having unity in the EPC as well.

The SLMC leader said that the portfolios in the EPC can be discussed among all the parties represented in the EPC before a final decision is reached.

He insisted that the SLMC has no intention of holding on to all the portfolios in the EPC and so had extended an invitation to all the parties to join the EPC government.

The SLMC leader also expressed hope that the budget of the EPC will be passed with the support of all political parties in the EPC on Tuesday like the National interim budget which was passed in Parliament with the support of the opposition. (Colombo Gazette)
