Governor of the Eastern Province, Austin Fernando, made his first official visit to Sampoor and listened to the grievances of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) on Sunday (8).
Governor Fernando, who visited the IDPs on the directive of President Maithripala Sirisena, is expected to hand over a report on his findings in Sampoor.
The IDPs in Sampoor emphasized that measures should be taken expeditiously for them to return to their original places as early as possible. The IDPs of Sampoor insisted that they should be allowed to return to their lands and houses acquired by the armed forces since 2006.
This is Fernando’s first official visit after assuming duties as the Governor of the Eastern Province. It is learnt that the Governor is to submit a comprehensive report to President Sirisena on his return to Colombo this week.
Displaced Tamil families being sheltered in three welfare centres at Kattaiparichan, Killiveddy, Pattithidal and Manalsenai said they were suffering due to the stoppage of free dry rations by the government authorities and that they find it difficult to earn a livelihood.
Trincomalee District Secretary, retired Maj. Gen. T.R. de Silva accompanied the Governor during his Sampoor tour.
He also found out what their expectations are. Retired Maj. Gen. T.R.de Silva, Trincomalee District Secretary, was also present.He met the displaced people following a directive by President Maithripala Sirisena and he is to submit his report to President on Tuesday, reports say.
