Jordan’s Prince Zeid to replace Pillay
The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, following consultations with the Chairmen of the regional groups of Member States, has informed the General Assembly of his intention to appoint Prince Zeid Ra’ad Zeid Al-Hussein of Jordan as the new United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. |
If approved, he will replace the current United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay who’s term ends in August.Prince Zeid Ra’ad Zeid Al-Hussein is currently Jordan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, a post he held previously for six and a half years, from 2000 to 2007.
From 2007 to 2010 he served as Jordan’s Ambassador to the United States and non-resident Ambassador to Mexico. He also served as Jordan’s Deputy Permanent Representative at the United Nations, with the rank of Ambassador, from 1996 to 2000. Former diplomat Dr.Dayan Jayathilake revealed if the UNHRC commissioner appoints investigation panel against SriLanka it would lead country to face dangerous situation.
Navaneetham Pillay willing to appoint Kofi Annan has the head of this investigation panel. Dayan Jayathilaka noted Kofi Annan as denied this request.Annan recommended for this post for his influenced diplomatic statues.
Kofi Annana won the Nobel Prize. Due to this SriLanka cannot deny visa to him and impose restrictions during his visits to the island.
Among the 13 member investigation panel two of them were world famous technical assistance.
Dayan Jayathikala further noted that Navi Pillay is willing to impose more external pressures on Lankan government and army.
Meanwhile final report on human rights violations in SriLanka will be submitted to the United Nation Human Rights Council session in March 2015.
It is also believe UNHRC will impose scientific and economic sanctions against SriLanka
