sri-lanka-buddhist-mobAll Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU) issuing a special statement has requested Muslims across the country to remain calm. It also requests all parties, including media, to act in a responsible manner to avoid further deterioration of the incident. 

The latest unrest came weeks after Muslim legislators asked Rajapaksa to protect their minority community from “Buddhist extremist elements” blamed for a recent spate of hate attacks. President Rajapaksa, who is a Buddhist, warned monks in January last year not to incite religious violence but never took any action and is believed will never take any action as the government survival depends on its rasist associated political groups. President Mahinda is well known for making lying and making promises which will never be implemented.

ACJU yesterday said that they had requested the Police to prevent the protest organized by the racist Buddhist group Bodu Bala Sena as it could lead to violent incidents. Despite such requests, the Police allowed the BBS to stage a protest in the Aluthgama town due to pressure from top politicians close to Rajapaksha.

Although Police curfews have been imposed in Aluthgama and Beruwala, the situation is yet to be brought under control. Police have urged people in the area to remain in their houses and assist Police in maintaining law and order.

Unconfirmed reports coming from Aluthgama said at least 10 shops have been damaged due to clashes in the area. However, the Police Media Unit refused to issue any statement over the matter.  Meanwhile, the Police Special Task Force (STF), has now been deployed in Aluthgama to stop ongoing incidents.
