More than 3000 Sri Lankan Muslims protested today outside the Prime Ministers house in London today. The Protests was against the Sri Lankan government sponsored riots on the Minority Muslim community.
Four people were killed and nearly 80 seriously wounded, while dozens of homes, businesses and vehicles were torched, with violence spreading to Beruwala. Protesters urged authorities to investigate and take action against those responsible.
Large number of Muslim Women and Children took part in the protest.
The attacks are the latest in a series of religious clashes to hit Sri Lanka following unrest in January and last year, when Buddhist mobs attacked a mosque in the capital Colombo. Muslims make up about 10 percent of the 20 million population, but are accused by nationalists of having undue influence in the Buddhist-majority country.
SLMC leader and Justice Minister Rauff Hakeem yesterday demanded that the govt take punitive action against those who had been inciting violence against the Muslim community. An irate Hakeem accused certain members of Buddhist extremist groups of causing chaos in the country.
