Eleven election offices of the Opposition Political Parties, including four of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), were attacked on Saturday night and early yesterday in the Moneragala District. Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) said Saturday had been one of the most tense days in the recent election campaign and supporters of a leading United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) candidate were behind the attacks.
“JVP offices in Obbegoda, Mariyarawa and Weliyaya, in Moneragala and Mayuragama, in Kataragama, have been attacked. Meanwhile, seven offices of other Opposition Parties have also been attacked.
JVP candidate for the Moneragala District, Anura Kumara Wickremasinghe has said that a leading UPFA candidate was behind the attack,” said CaFFE Executive Director Rajith Keerthi Tennakoon.
Several UPFA candidates have brought down goons from different parts of the country to intimidate Opposition candidates and supporters, he said. This trend is also present in the Badulla District and the lack of election law enforcement has emboldened candidates to be more violent, Tennakoon added.
