30 expat Tamils to contest Canadian local polls

canada pmMore than 30 expatriate Tamils of Lankan origin are contesting the Local Government polls in the Ontario Province, Canada next Monday (27). According to informed sources, this is the largest number of Tamils of Lankan origin to contest the Local Government polls in Canada.

Several of the candidates are in their 30s and early 40s and they belong to the second generation expatriate Tamils who migrated to Canada following the civil strife in the island, sources said.
A recent survey conducted in Canada put the total population of the Tamils of Lankan origin in the country at 200,000 and it is for the first time a significant number of Tamils are contesting the Local Government polls at the majority French region, Ontario, sources said.

Following in the footsteps of Rathika Sitsabesan of Jaffna origin, who is a member of the Canadian Parliament, the Tamil United Liberation Front General Secretary, V. Anandasangaree’s son, Gary Anadasangaree, is also planning to contest the Canadian Parliamentary polls next year. Gary is a lawyer by profession and manages a legal firm in Canada.
Meanwhile, despite the political differences with TULF Leader Anandasangareee, TNA Leader R. Sampanthan has extended his support to Gary at the Canadian polls to be held next year.
