The date of the Presidential election is known by all main astrologers in the country although the Commissioner of Elections is still clueless, Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) said.
The fact that everyone, apart from all the bureaucrats responsible for holding elections, are talking about the Presidential election to be held in January, is an indication that it is the politicians and astrologers who decide the dates for crucial elections. This is a severe blow to people’s faith in the credibility of elections, CaFFE said.
“The official announcement for the Presidential election will be made after the President’s birthday, on November 18. Analyzing how governments of the past have announced the dates of elections, we see that they were held on a date between the closest possible legal date for an election and the longest possible date.
However the current view that the election would be held on the first two weeks of January 2015 is correct. The election will be held at a date near the closest possible legal date for an election,” Rajith Keerthi Tennakoon, Executive Director of CaFFE said.
He added that the government is also aware of date the election will be held as they are opening election operations centers and have commenced election campaigning. Thus only the Commissioner of Elections seems to be unaware of the date for elections.
“In the past it was the Commissioner of Elections who decided on dates of elections but when it now obvious that it is the astrologers and politicians who make the decision.
This is a blow to the people’s faith in elections and CaFFE urges all stakeholders to assure the credibility of elections,” Tennakoon said.
