Prominent leftist, National Languages and Social Integration Minister, Vasudeva Nanayakkara stressed that they do not approve of the executive powers held by president Mahinda Rajapaksa and have been fighting to abolish the Executive Presidency, ever since it was created. For last 10 years he had been with Mahinda Rajapaksha who had always promised to abolish the system. Nanayakara is known for releasing statements and non had been implemented to date by President Mahinda. His DLF party members fears they will loose their Minister posts if they do not support the President Mahinda.
Nanayakara had said that he asked the President to delay the Presidential Election and go for a General Election with Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Prime Minister after abolishing the Presidential system and vesting the powers in the Parliament.
But that proposal was not accepted by the President Rajapaksha and his family members. President Mahinda showed no interest in abolishing the Presidential system at all as he wants to keep the power within their family members. Although their proposal was not accepted the Communist party Ministers have to work for the victory of the President or the ‘Ministers’ will loose the Ministerial posts and may be that the President may through the so called ‘FILES’ he holds on their faces and that will be the ‘END OF THE ROAD’ of politics to these old Communist leaders said a party man from the new alliance.
In a media statement, Nanayakkara said that the Democratic Left Front (DLF), headed by him, is continuing the fight to abolish the Presidency system and is doing it within the alliance. He had been part of the government alliance for the last 10 years and was unable to do it says he will do it within next five years. “This is not a fight to suppress the national forces behind the Alliance. We are hoping to change the Presidential system and improve the Democratic forces while safeguarding the national forces,” he added. Justifying their support for Mahinda Rajapaksa to ensure his victory, Nanayakkara said, President Mahinda Rajapaksa represents all those national forces and the imperialists, and right wing capitalists can suppress these forces only by defeating President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
“We have to face two basic questions simultaneously. One is to work for the victory of the people’s nationalistic and patriotic forces. We have to work for the victory of the President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who is giving the leadership to these national forces. The other problem is to find ways and means to terminate the Presidential powers held by the President Mahinda. Achieving these seemingly opposing objectives simultaneously is our challenge,” he added. Vasudeva Nanayakara and his party MP’s had supported the 18th amendment to change the constitution so that President Mahinda could stay in power for more than two terms (10 years).
He further noted, that imperialists are trying to use Human Rights against the government and the leadership with the help of Tamil Diaspora and various other International Organizations. “We can defeat these efforts through an election victory.” He added, “Such forces cannot do this if the majority are trusting and behind the leadership and the only way to defeat these forces is to work for the victory of the President. This is the very reason for holding the Presidential Election early.
