The people who gathered at the common Opposition candidate Maithripala Sirisena’s election rally booed former Army Chief Sarath Fonseka and shouted at him not to lie when he said the military operation in 2009 was carried out with only a few human causalities in the Vavuniya District.
The bitter controversy surrounding the final stages of the Sri Lankan government’s operation to crush separatist rebels, after a former UN official claimed that up to 40,000 Tamil civilians may have been killed.
The gathering shouted, “don’t lie, don’t lie” when Fonseka was describing the manner in which the war was carried out. Responding to the booing by the gathering, he said it was because of the manner he carried out the war that he had received the most number of votes from the North and East in 2010, when he contested against President Rajapaksa.
The rally took place at the Chankilian Park in Nallur on Tuesday (30). Around 5,000 people turned out at the rally from all parts of the Peninsula.
Earlier, when former President Chandrika Bandaranaike called the LTTE leader ‘Mr. Prabhakaran’, the people cheered at her.
The former President also thanked the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) for extending its support to the common Opposition candidate Sirisena.
UNP Jaffna District Parliamentarian, Vijayakala Maheswaran, and Colombo UNP Parliamentarian D.M. Swaminathan also took part in the rally where Sirisena was crowned with a turban.
Meanwhile, President Rajapaksa will address his first election rally in Jaffna today (2).
Rajapaksa has long promised the United Nations and other countries that he would offer (13+ amendment) power sharing as an alternative to the insurgent’s fight for secession if he is allowed to kill the LTTE in May 2009 with the support of China and Pakistan.
The world leaders turned away and more than 40,000 Tamil Civilians and LTTE Leaders and their family members who surrendered with white flag after UN negotiated the surrender were killed by the Sri Lankan forces. The killing of more than 40,000 Tamil Civilians, killing of more than 1000 Insurgents and their family members who surrendered with White Flag after UN negotiated the surrender and raping of Tamil girls by the Sri Lankan forces are seen as War Crime.
But Mahinda had said the UN charter does not allow the world body to intervene in the domestic affairs of its member states hence he will not allow the International community to punish his army who had commited War Crime. If they had not commited War Crime there is no reason why the President will NOT allow a international investigation.
Prior to the rally the President is expected to travel to Kankesanthurai (KKS) by Yal Devi. The railway line from Jaffna to KKS has been extended and a trial run was carried out a few days ago. President Mahinda believes that by giving economic facilities he can get the votes of the Tamils who’s next of skins were killed by his army.
Minister Devananda was addressing public meetings in the Manipay electorate in the Jaffna district this week with the protection of the Army and police.
The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) which is clamouring for police, and land powers for the Northern Provincial Council today, had rejected a package offered by the Chandrika Bandaranaike Government that went beyond the powers of the Provincial Councils, Traditional Industries and Small Enterprises Development Minister Douglas Devananda said. Though the TNA is demanding those powers under the 13th Amendment today they spurned many chances to find a peaceful solution to the problem through negotiations with successive Governments, as they were mortally afraid of the LTTE.
President Mahinda Rajapaksha is refusing to implement the 13th amendment of the countries constitution although he promised to implement 13+ before he killed more than 40,000 Tamil civilians in May 2009 alone. More than 1000 LTTE leaders and their family members who surrendered with White flag after UN officials organised the surrender were killed by the Sri Lankan forces under President Mahinda.
President was offering more than 13+ because he was afraid of the LTTE, but because we have no LTTE now he will NOT give Tamils any rights. TNA rejected a package offered by the Chandrika Bandaranaike Government that went beyond the powers of the Provincial Councils.
“Today the TNA and Tamil Political Leaders in the Opposition are making a big hue and cry over Police and Land powers for the Provincial Council to rouse people’s feelings for their own benefits. Therefore, we must not cease ongoing development due to these emotional and provocative speeches” the Minister said.
President and his brothers who are controlling the government are refusing to give the Police and Land powers for the Provincial Council which is part of the constitution the law of the country. The president is refusing the Police and Land powers for the Provincial Council because we are Tamils and want us to be second class citizens of this country. According to Minister Thayananda the President will stop the ongoing development if the Tamils don’t vote for Sinhala racist party.
Minister Devananda who is with the government for years said that the problems that went on for years were now being resolved and those which were raised by the people at present would be resolved soon.
It looks like the promises made by the Sinhala government to Tamils are never implemented. Only before an election and before a foreign diplomat comes to Sri Lanka few ‘Promises’ will be made and ofcource will never be implemented.
Devananda called upon the people to take serious note of the fact that, despite the TNA’s long parliamentary representation in the past, and running the administration in about 20 Local bodies in the North and the East and most of the Pradeshiya Sabhas being under their control they had been unable to find solutions for the people’s problems.
The Sinhala government associated with racist Sinhala Buddhist parties under President Mahinda Rajapaksha will never give equal rights to Tamils in Sri Lanka or even implement the countries current constitution in full.
