Maithripala and Ranil take oaths


Maithripala Sirisena took oaths as the sixth President of Sri Lanka at Independence square this evening while opposition United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe took oaths as the Prime Minister.

Sirisena took oaths in front of Justice K. Sripavan and not Chief Justice Mohan Peiris.

Addressing the Nation after taking oaths, Sirisena said that he will not seek a second term in office.

Sirisena thanked the public, former President Chandrika Kumaratunga, the UNP, JHU, SLMC, TNA and others who helped him secure the victory at the polls yesterday.

He said that while ensuring he delivers and brings about the change expected of him in Sri Lanka, he will also look to strengthen Sri Lanka’s foreign policy in order to maintain friendly relations with other countries.

After taking oaths, both the new President and Prime Minister were driven away in ceremonial motorcades. Several members of the diplomatic community and invitees were present at the event. (Colombo Gazette)
