Pillayan under attack

pillayanThe leader of the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pullikal (TMVP) and former Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan, says TMVP members and supporters have come under attack in the eastern province. Pillayan says since election day, the houses of TMVP members based at several locations in the east had been attacked with stones while several TMVP members and supporters were also threatened.

Pillayan and his group members had been threatening the public when President Mahinda was in power and had the backing of the President and the Police who turned away when Pillayans men threatened the public who were against Presidents racist policies. Pillayan and his TMVP members were used as paramilitary by the government forces against the Tamils and Muslims in the East.

Pillayan’s spokesman Azad Maulana said that in one incident TMVP member Inniya Bharathi was threatened in Ampara after his house was surrounded. Maulana said that the incidents were related to the Presidential elections and are revenge attacks involving even rehabilitated LTTE cadres.

The TMVP supported President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Presidential election and the party has also been a strong critic of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) who were popular among the Tamil community. The Tamils and Muslims in the East voted President Maithiri and gave the highest votes to him. Since Mahinda lost the election the public had turned the anger on Pillayan and its members who had been bulling the public.

The TMVP spokesman said that complaints have been lodged at police stations in the east, including at the Batticaloa police station. He said that if rehabilitated LTTE cadres are used in revenge attacks there is a fear that they may not just use stones very soon. Maulana said that the TMVP has now advised all its senior members to shift to the TMVP headquarters in Batticaloa for security reasons.
