Some political religious groups, who spread racism under former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, were rewarded with land, vehicle permits and protection by the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development, the New Democratic Front’s Anti-Corruption Front said.
Front, Member, Ven. Ulapone Sumangala Thera alleged that former Minister of Construction, Housing, Engineering Services and Common Amenities and Leader of the National Freedom Front, Wimal Weerawansa was operating websites which were offensive to the peaceful coexistence of the people who belong to diverse races and religions.
There were monks involved in commercial, business enterprises, he said.
National Organizer and Media Spokesman of the Jathika Hela Urumaya, Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe told Ceylon Today that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s actions had been adverse to reconciliation and unity among the county’s varied ethnicities.
“The Bodu Bala Sena (BBS), which operated under the patronage of Rajapaksa, had assaulted Muslims and Tamils and were also attempting to attack Christians,” Attorney-at-Law, Maithri Gunaratne alleged, when contacted by Ceylon Today.
The BBS in the meantime has categorically denied receiving any benefits under the Mahinda Rajapaksa Government.
Chief Coordinator of the Education and Research Unit of the BBS, Dr. Chamila Liyanage said that he was no longer with the BBS, due to an ideological conflict.
“We have not had any trouble with the new government. However, 24 hours after President Maithripala Sirisena came to power we received obscene phone calls from both within the country and overseas, in particular from Muslim groups,” General Secretary of the BBS, Ven. Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thera said, when contacted by Ceylon Today.
