Wimal Weerawansa’s wife arrested

vimal_weerawansa_170Shashi Weerawansa, wife of former Minister Wimal Weerawansa, who was under investigation for allegedly submitting forged documents to get a diplomatic passport, has been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Police Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana said.

“The CID apprehended Shashi Weerawansa at a private hospital in Malabe, this evening (22),” SSP added.

A manhunt had been launched to locate Weerawansa, after the CID officers found that the suspect has fled her residence in Kaduwela, since last Friday.

Earlier, the police too sought the Attorney General’s advice in this case. The CID initiated the inquiry as they received information that Weerawansa had allegedly obtained the diplomatic passports by submitting birth certificate with forged names and dates of birth.

Shashi sick; probe delayed

Responding to reports which said his wife was to be arrested in a few days the Jathika Nidahas Peramuna (JNP) Leader and former minister Wimal Weerawansa said his wife, Shashi Weerawansa was only asked to come to Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on February 19.

In a statement Mr. Weerawansa said this request was made by the CID in writing though the Talangama Police on February 18.

The Former Minister said they had informed the CID that his wife was not able to come on that date since she was indisposed.

Therefore he said a request was made to postpone the inquiry through a lawyer while a medical report was also submitted.

However, he said she had to be hospitalised since her condition worsened. He said this was done after informing the CID.

Mr. Weerawansa therefore said an agreement was reached with the CID to carry out an inquiry after her recovery on a new day.

The JNP Leader charged that interrogation of his wife was aimed at destroying him politically.

He said the request for his wife to report to CID was made just hours after he participated in a political rally in Nugegoda on February 18. – See more at: http://www.dailymirror.lk/64361/shashi-sick-probe-delayed#sthash.BFibfSSU.dpuf
