Former Minister, Wimal Weerawansa’s wife, Shashee Weerawansa, who was arrested for providing false information and presenting forged documents to obtain passports, was banned from travelling abroad by Colombo Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya, yesterday (23).
It is said that Shashee Weerawansa had obtained a diplomatic passport by providing false documents and CID had told the Court that this diplomatic passport was issued due to a written request by former Minister Wimal Weerawansa to the former Controller General of the Department of Immigration and Emigration (DIE), Chulananda Perera.
Ranasinghe Randunu Mudiyanselage Shirja Udayanthi, also known as Shashee Weerawansa, who was arrested last Sunday (22) for obtaining forged documents, is currently undergoing treatment at the Neville Fernando Hospital in Malabe.
Two CID officers issued a progress report of the investigation with the signature of the OIC of the Unit to Prevent Individuals from leaving the country illegally, W. A. Jayantha to the Court. According to them the Judicial Medical Officer has said that she needs to remain in hospital. The CID requested the Colombo Magistrate Court or Kaduwela Magistrate Court to examine the suspect and to remand her until the 2 March.
Colombo Magistrate Pilapitiya ordered the JMO to conduct a medical examination on the suspect to verify her medical status and to produce a report to the Court. She is to be produced before the Court if her status is not that serious.
CID initiated this investigation on a complaint made by a Hewapthiranage Chaminda Perera of Battaramulla, which says that the suspect had obtained forged passports. Initial investigations revealed that passports N1284124 and D2642817, belonging to the suspect, are in fact forged documents.
According to the CID the suspect had used her birth certificate, her son’s and daughter’s birth certificates to create passport N1284124 with the NIC 675320233V while the other passport D3642817 was made with the NIC 715344696 with a signed document by former Minister Wimal Weerawansa. This request made by the former minister was performed by the then Controller General of DIE Chulananda Perera according to his testimony. CID announced that they received information regarding suspicious transactions she had made using the two NICs through banks and several other financial institutions.
Kaduwela Magistrate Dhammika Hemapala remanded Shashee Weerawansa at the Neville Fernando Hospital, Malabe until 5 March. She is being held at the Hospital under the protection of a prison official.
