More then thirty Members of Parliament who became super rich in last few years under Mahinda’s rule visited former President Mahinda Rajapaksa at his Carlton House in Tangalle.
Most of these MP’s have become super rich within last few years and are accused of abusing the government institutes, taking commissions on Government contracts, drug trafficking, Passport scam, human trafficking, associating with abduction and contract killing of business people with the support of the Mahinda government.
Some of Mahinda’s close associates were involved and associated with killings and who were walking free due to their close link with Rajapakshe family. The Police under Mahinda rule were unable to arrest or take action against these MP’s due to their close link with former President Mahinda.
Pivithuru Hela Urumaya leader and Western Provincial Council member Udaya Gammanpila stated that a large number of Provincial Councillors and local government members also participated in the visit.
Some of the former Ministers were known for playing racist card to stay in power with the blessing of then President Mahinda. Former Ministers Dullas Alahapperuma, Bandula Gunawardena, Kumara Welgama, Dinesh Gunawardena, Wimal Weerawansa, TB Ekanayake, Prof GL Peiris, Salinda Dissanayake, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Gamini Lokuge and Johnston Fernando are said to be among the UPFA MPs who have joined the occasion.
Gammanpila said that an extensive political discussion between the former President and his minister is currently ongoing. It is known that since some MP’s fraudulent activities have come to light due to change of government they know that they will NOT be allowed to stand as a SLFP candidate in the forthcoming election hence they are after former President Mahinda who’s family members were partly beneficiaries of the fraud. Former President Mahinda is compelled to support them as his family members were beneficiaries and he is under obligation to support these fraudsters or be exposed.
Former President Mahinda in the last election in January threatened his MP’s to support him or be exposed as he has their ‘Files’ and most of these ‘Super Rich’ MP’s who knew that Mahinda was going to loose the election but did not want their dealing exposed had to stay back with Mahinda and support his loosing battle. Some played their usual Racist cards but failed.
As the new coalition government under President Maithiri has promised to take legal action against all fraudulent MP’s who misused the government institutes and their power as MP’s, they have no other option other then to ask their former President Mahinda to come back to power and protect them from being punished under the rule of the land. Mahinda Rajapaksa, the former president of Sri Lanka, is planning to stand in parliamentary polls to launch an attempt to return to power, aides have said.
But in an interview President Maithripala Sirisena said once the Constitution was amended there would be no room left for any single family to control the country in the future. “Sri Lanka fell into the hands of one (Rajapakshe) family. With the amendments to the Constitution, we will not leave room for any single family to control the country ever again,”
The JVP party MP’s are with a clean record to date and they are pressurising the new government to take action on these fraudsters but the new government is taking a slow path due to the current government is a hung parliament. The victory of Maithripala Sirisena by six percentage points in a runoff vote on 8 January was welcomed by India and western nations including the US. Analysts had described the election as the most significant in the country for decades and a last chance for democracy.
57 MP’s, inclusive of representatives from all coalition partners of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA), had visited to extend their support to Rajapaksa in view of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year a indirect message to new government to say that ” don’t expose our fraudulent activities or we will support Mahinda”.
