President calls for unanimous passage of 19A
President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday appealed to all political parties represented in parliament to vote for the 19 Amendment to the Constitution. The President emphasized the importance enacting the 19 Amendment in accordance with the ruling given by the Supreme Court recently. The President was addressing the nation on television to mark his government completing 100 days in power.
The following is the full text of the statement released by the President’s Office last night: “On this occasion that marks 100 days since my election as President, I think it is proper that I address you as your first servant, appointed by you. Following the results of the Presidential Election on January 8 this year, you gave me the opportunity of being sworn in as the Head of State or President of this country.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference has reiterated its support for immediate curtailment of dictatorial features in the Constitution by enacting the 19 Amendment to the Constitution.
