UPFA MPs from Kurunegala, Puttalam, Gampaha, Matara, Ratnapura and Digamadulla are strongly tipped to cross over to the UNP, according to informed government sources, to seek re-election to Parliament at the next general election as candidates of the United National Party.

A group of Opposition parliamentarians will cross over to the ruling party prior to parliament being dissolved in order to strengthen Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s hands in Parliament, the sources said. All these parliamentarians are prepared to seek election to parliament as candidates of the United National Party at the coming general election, the source added.

UNP leaders have been having a regular exchange of views with this group that is willing to cross over to the government, the source said.

It is learnt that a UNP stalwart from the Matara District has highly recommended an UPFA parliamentarian of the same district to the UNP leadership and the party leadership has expressed approval for this particular parliamentarian joining the UNP. It is also learnt that these parliamentarians will seek re-election at the General Election through the UNP, representing the districts of Kurunegala, Puttalam, Gampaha, Matara, Ratnapura and Digamadulla.

There are signs that parliament would be dissolved after the 20th Amendment to the Constitution is adopted and a new electoral system is adopted. It is strongly believed in some circles that this group of parliamentarians will join the ruling party prior to that.
