Recording strong criticism of President Maithripala Sirisena’s decision to order hearings into the case concerning the brutal gang rape and murder of…… 18-year-old Jaffna schoolgirl Vithya, before a Special Court in the North, the Bodu Bala Sena’s General Secretary Ven. Galagodaatthe Gnanasara Thera yesterday wanted to know why there were such Special Courts being instituted only for crimes committed in the North.
Vehemently condemning Vithya’s rape and murder, Ven. Gnanasara asked why there was no special Court established to also hear the Kotakethana and similar inhuman rape/murder cases elsewhere in the country.
He made the point that there were no special ethnic group related privileges for anyone in this country.
“No one approves of this rape and murder. We are utterly shocked. Whether such incidents happen in the North or in the South, each and every one of us in society must stand together against crimes which are so odious in character, regardless of race, caste and religion. Such crimes are taking place all over the country. Thus, are we to be instituting special Courts everywhere? This is madness,” Gnanasara Thera said.
