The sacrifice made by S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike in the course of political and social transformation is again required by the country, President Maithripala Sirisena said.
“I am dedicated to make the changes the country requires placing even my life at stake,” he said. “Every politician worldwide who made political transformations had to face challenges, even sacrificing their lives. I am dedicated to gain the required social, economic and political transformation in the country by uniting every social and political force, without being afraid of any challenge,” he said.
The President made these remarks at the inauguration of a programme themed ‘Let’s get united, win and work’ in Dambadeniya yesterday.
It was organised to raise awareness among SLFP activists.
President Sirisena said he did not sign any personal agreement with the UNP.
“I came out from the government and reached an agreement with 49 organisations to make the required change for the country and the people,” he said.
A Prime Minister could be elected from any area of the country. What is really needed is for that is new plans, thoughts and dedication for the people, the President said.
He said it is everyone’s responsibility to make a commitment for the betterment of the people uniting every intellectual and scholar within a new political culture. Minister S.B. Nawinne, North Western Province Chief Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera and Deputy Minister Shantha Bandara also spoke.
Deputy Minister Eric Weerawardena and MP Jayaratne Herath were also present.
