President Maithripala Sirisena has decided to reinstate leader of the NSSP Dr Wickramabahu Karunaratne in his previous position of senior lecturer of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences at the University of Peradeniya with back wages from 1982.

WICKRAMABAHUDr. Karaunaratne, addressing a press conference, at the NSSP office in Colombo yesterday said that he had been sacked from the university for fighting against the executive presidency by former President J. R. Jayewardene in 1978. Following an appeal he had been reinstated but was removed again in 1982 when he fought against holding of a presidential election.

He said that he had been forwarding appeals to be reinstated since then. “In 2001, the then Minister of Higher Education Dr Sarath Amunugama gave a directive to university authorities to reinstate me but it was not implemented. The incumbent President has studied the situation and ordered authorities to implement the directive given by Minister Amuugama in 2001 and to reinstate me,” Dr Karunaratne said.

Dr Karunaratne said that though the directive to reinstate would be implemented he had now passed the age for public service and would officially retire after being reinstated.
