Muslim alliance in the making

HakeemIn a new turn of events, within the political scenario, Muslim political leaders are contemplating on forming a new alliance to contest the general election. One of the main mediators in this effort told Ceylon Today that they had already discussed the matter with the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) and All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) of Minister Rishad Bathuideen.
“We plan to discuss the matter with other Muslim politicians in the United National Party and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. This will be something similar to the Tamil National Alliance. We have already received positive responses from many while some others have expressed their concern about the matter” he said.
Explaining as to what led them to take such a decision, he noted that the community was worried about the fact that major parties like the UNP cutting down the quota allocated for Muslim candidates was one of the main reasons. He also said if the SLFP were to withdraw from the UPFA and contest alone, then, they would see the possibility of contesting along with the SLFP.
