To ensure the dignity of Tamil women and their safety, the Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF) has fielded a significant number of Tamil women candidates in the North and East, according to TNPF Leader Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam.
Flinging accusations at Tamil Parliamentarians of the post-war period, Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam speaking at an election rally at Thalayady in the Vadamarachchi region said that with the end of the war, women in the North and East were facing enormous problems.
“The women in the North and East live without any livelihood support. Parliamentarians who represented the people in the two provinces have failed to address the humanitarian problems. Thousands of lives perished in the civil war but the government or the Tamil Parliamentarians have hardly done anything for the people affected by the war, in the past five years,” Ponnambalam said.
“The worst affected areas and the people devastated by the war have not been compensated properly. Vadamarachchi area is the worst affected region in the Peninsula and several areas in the region still remain without basic facilities,” added Ponnambalam addressing the people in the war -torn areas in the North.
Former Parliamentarian Pathmini Sithamparanathan, a candidate from the TNPF said that she was contesting to safeguard the dignity and the safety of the Tamil women in the North. “The safety of the Tamil women in the North and East should be ensured at the national level. We will strive hard to win the rights of the Tamil women.”
