Kurunegala district UPFA candidate Mahinda Rajapaksa is insulting the intellect of the voters by giving very silly promises to voters including youth to deceive them and capture power by hook or crook. People have not forgotten the manner he suppressed student rights without any shame showing his 10 year oppressive rule, State Minister of Defence and Gampaha district UNP candidate Ruwan Wijewardena said in a statement issued yesterday.
The statement added that when the student community demanded the previous government to increase the Rs. 2,500 Mahapola Scholarship in proportion to the high cost of living the Rajapaksa regime replied witht tear gas and water canon and baton charges without increasing the scholarship even by a rupee.
Mahinda Rajapaksa who ruled for 10 years thought of increasing the Mahapola Scholarship to Rs. 4,000 on the eve of his election defeat. The last budget by the Rajapaksa regime was purely an election oriented budget.
But a majority of university students exercised their votes to defeat the Rajapaksa regime without falling prey to hnis election gimmicks.
He said the Maithri-Ranil government took steps to increase the Mahapola Scholarship to Rs. 5,000 from the very first budget because it understood the p-roblems of students.
Mahinda Rajapaksa who did not take steps to increase the Mahapola Scholarship during the entire period of his 10 year rule now promised to increase it to Rs. 6,000 and people should ask him as to whom he was trying to fool.
A person destined for certain defeat like Mahinda Rajapaksa can give any rosy promises because they know that they need not be implemented.
