Members of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) commenced a walk from the town of Kilinochchi to Jaffna yesterday (10) requesting that an international investigation be carried out into war crimes.
The Annual Convention of the Geneva Human Rights Council is due to be held within the next few days and TNA Parliamentarian Shivagnanam Shridharan said that the walk was held to get the convention to focus its attention on war crimes which occurred in this country.
Shridharan also said that the Geneva Human Rights Council should carry out an investigation into the war crimes which occurred during the war and the offenders should be punished.
Member of the Northern Provincial Council, M. K. Shivajilingam who joined in the walk said that this walk which commenced yesterday (10) will take up to five days when they will reach Nallur in Jaffna. The Tamil people will not accept a local investigation into war crimes, he stressed.
Shivajilingam also issued an open invitation to anyone who agrees to an international investigation into war crimes to join in this walk.
Member of the Northern Provincial Council, Ananthi Sashidharan who is also participating in the walk said that a complete investigation should be carried out by the Geneva Human Rights Commission into the murders and disappearances in this country during the period of the war.
She further said that subsequent to a complete investigation being carried out into the murders and disappearance in this country during the period of the war, the Geneva Human Rights Commission should take action to severely punish those found guilty.
A large crowd including representatives of the TNA, representatives of the All Ceylon Tamil Congress, representatives of civil organizations and Tamil people joined in the walk.
