Protest staged in Ramanathapuram and Dindigul districts
Volunteers of Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK) were arrested when they attempted to block a train in Mandapam on Monday even as cadres of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) and Naam Tamizhar Katchi staged demonstrations here, seeking international probe into alleged genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka.
Led by TVK youth wing leader Jerome Kumar, 21 volunteers attempted to block the Madurai-Rameswaram train as part of the party’s State-wide agitation, seeking an international investigation into war crimes and genocide of Tamils during the final phase of the civil war in Sri Lanka.
At the district headquarters here, MDMK volunteers, led by its district secretary S R M Raja, staged a demonstration in front of Aranmanai and raised slogans opposing move for a domestic investigation into the charges of genocide of Tamils and war crimes.
They called for an impartial investigation by an international body.
They raised slogans in support of Tamil Eelam and called upon the Sri Lankan authorities to withdraw the military from Tamil areas and “dismantle Sinhala settlements” established there. Volunteers of Naam Tamizhar Katchi also staged a demonstration in the town with similar demands.
Dindigul
MDMK cadres staged a demonstration near the Dindigul Corporation office on Monday demanding the Centre to urged the United Nations to conduct an international inquiry into war crimes in Sri Lanka. The Centre must press the Human Rights Commission to conduct an inquiry in the island nation, they said.
Eighty cadres of Thamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi were arrested when they tried to picket trains at Dindigul railway station on Monday with similar demands.
The cadres took out a rally from Nagal Nagar and tried to enter the railway station. But the police prevented them at the entrance and arrested them.
