Sri Lanka’s sovereignty is guaranteed again by formulating a domestic mechanism to find out the truth about the war, in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution, said Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The Prime Minister said the LTTE and its leader Prabhakaran are responsible for this conflict and if they were alive, cases would have be filed against them.
He added that most of them are dead. He added that the prime concern should be reconciliation and not filing cases.
The Prime Minister added that to bring about unity and reconciliation, the truth should be found first.
He also said for this reason, Sri Lanka has introduced the Compassionate Council which other countries had not adopted in similar situations. He added that this Council was adopted taking Emperor Dharmashoka’s example that he used Buddhism to bring about reconciliation, which is mainly based on Compassion (Karuna).
The Prime Minister made these observations at yesterday’s opening ceremony of the reconstructed Hyde Park Grounds, under the theme “Revolutionary Hyde Park-Now a revamped Arena”.
The two storied building built at a cost of Rs 150 million by the Colombo Municipal Council in the Hyde Park Grounds (Philip Gunawardena Playground) premises consists of a gymnasium, the Colombo Municipal Council press and trade union offices etc.
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe further said that the Hyde Park Grounds which is also known as Philip Gunawardena Grounds is a historic place, where the Leftist parties held their rallies on various occasions.
He added that this was the place used by the then Sama Samaha Party Leader Philip Gunawardena to address his people. He added that it was the place they came to listen to the speeches of late Dr.N M Perera.
The Prime Minister also said Hyde Park Grounds was the same place Rohana Wijeweera spoke in 1971. He added the UNP too used the Hyde Park Grounds for its rallies when Opposition.
He also added that due to its historic value, the Hyde Park Grounds should be well maintained and protected.
