Colombo Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya authorized the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday (7) to detain for a period of 90 days for lengthy questioning two karuna/pillayan members who were taken into custody in connection with the shooting and assassination of former Member of Parliament of the Batticaloa District, Joseph Pararajasingham.
The two were arrested 10 years after the incident The Chief Magistrate permitted the detention of the two suspects, Edwin Silva Krishna Kandaraja alias Pradeep Master, a resident of Third Cross Street, Hospital Road, Batticaloa and Rengasami Kanayagama alias Caajan Mama. The two were taken into custody by a group of police officers led by Chief Inspector Ravindra Wimalasiri of the CID.
The CID informed the Court that on the night of 25 December 2005, during Christmas Mass held at the St. Maria’s Church in Batticaloa, Joseph Pararajasingham was shot dead by a group of unidentified gunmen, injuring another eight persons.
The CID informed the Court that during investigations it was revealed that two of the suspects involved in this crime are currently abroad. The CID will obtain the assistance of INTERPOL to take these two into custody.
The CID also informed the Court that a six spent 9 mm cartridges were found at the scene of the crime and said, three firearms had been used. The CID is carrying out further investigations in order to take into custody these firearms and a van which was used in the attack.
