The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has sought Interpol assistance to take into custody a person named ‘Sharan’, who is said to be the brain behind the planning of the murder of former Member of Parliament of the Jaffna District of the Tamil National Alliance, Nadaraja Raviraj.
A high-ranking official of the CID told Ceylon Today that, since Sharan was … taking political refuge in Zurich, Switzerland, the permission of the Court of the country is required in order to hand him over to Sri Lanka.

At the same time, since there is no permanent address for Sharan, he said that the assistance of Interpol is required for all matters.
The official said further that it has been confirmed in investigations carried out so far that the murders of Raviraj and Prageeth Ekneligoda had been carried out by intelligence officers.

The CID official also said that a Colonel, who has been arrested in connection with the disappearance of Journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda, has been accused of being involved in the Raviraj murder as well and that this fact has been confirmed during investigations.

The former parliamentarian, who was a well-known human rights lawyer, was assassinated by an unidentified gunman on 10 November 2006 in Colombo.
On 9 November 2006, one day before Raviraj’s assassination, he led a demonstration in front of the UNICEF office in Colombo against the Vaharai bombing, in which 45 civilians were killed.
The CID took three personnel of the Sri Lanka Navy into custody in March 2013 on suspicion of this murder.
