No justice could be obtained from the present government regarding frauds, corruption and waste that was carried out during Rajapaksa regime says the President of National Trade Union Center (NTUC) K. D. Lal Kantha.
Speaking at the 8th National Convention of the All Ceylon Excise Employees Union held in Colombo yesterday (9th) Mr. Lal Kantha said, “Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe manipulated a ‘national’ government to stabilize his premiership. When another political party has formed the government Mr. Maithripala Sirisena has no power. When Ranil Wickremesinghe’s government was in power in 2001, Chandrika Kumaratunga, the President at the time who was also the leader of the cabinet, avoided coming to the cabinet at the end of that government. The present President too does not have any power. It is the UNP that has power.
Don’t expect any justice from the coalition government regarding mass scale frauds and corruption that were committed during Rajapaksa regime. The officers of FCID and CID have carried out their duties properly and had done investigations correctly. However, these investigations do not go beyond the IGP and the Attorney General. The reason for this is the intervention by the powerful that are above the officials.
It is useless expecting justice and impartiality from the present government. The reason the coalition government was formed was to protect fraudsters and the corrupt. The only income of the government at present is taxing. Tax for a bottle of arrack is Rs.888. The price of a bottle of arrack is Rs.1060. The quantity of arrack in the bottle is worth Rs.172 only. What do people consume – arrack or taxes? Promises were made to give guaranteed prices for tea, rubber and paddy. Nobody knows what happened to such promises. There are no solutions for people’s burning social and economic issues. Just like Mahinda did this government too shows Geneva to avoid real issues of the masses.”
