Minister of Internal Affairs and Northwestern Development S. B. Nawinna said yesterday that the government has decided to grant dual citizenship to 2,000 persons.
He said further that a large number of applications had been received by his ministry seeking dual citizenship and 2,000 of them have been selected on the instructions of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
According to the Minister, arrangements have been made to grant these individuals dual citizenship at an official function that will be held under the auspices of President Sirisena on 17 November. More than 90% of those among the 2,000 individuals who have applied for dual citizenship are Sinhalese with only 10% of Tamils and Muslims among them.
Minister Nawinna said that most of the Sri Lankans who have sought dual citizenship are domiciled in America, England, Italy, Australia and New Zealand.
