Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said that he obtained intelligence assistance from overseas to defeat the LTTE and former President Chandrika Kumaratunga and also former President Mahinda Rajapaksa continued to obtain such intelligence assistance.
The Prime Minister said that countries like America, China, Pakistan and India helped Sri Lanka a lot during the war.
He said that after 2005 the former Government was determined to defeat the LTTE and began operations in the east.
The Prime Minister said that later the former Mahinda Government obtained Indian assistance for a resolution at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva where an assurance was given that any human rights abuses said to have been committed during the final stages of the war by the Sri Lankan forces on Tamils will be investigated.
Wickremesinghe said the former Government should NOT have given such an undertaking to the UN and now his government is trying to correct that mistake and cover up the Human Right Abuses committed by the Sri Lankan forces on the Tamils.
Former Government should NOT have given assurance to UN that it will investigate the Human Rights abuses by the Sri Lankan forces on Thousands of Tamil civilians and LTTE Leaders who surrendered with White Flag after UN negotiated the surrender. Thousands of Tamil Girls were raped and killed by the Sinhala forces and thousands of Tamil youths were killed in cold blood by the Sinhala forces as photos and videos taken by members of these forces.
The Prime Minister also said that the Government will not work against the military (or investigate the Human Rights Abuses committed by them on Tamils) but at the same time it will investigate the disappearance of journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda and the murder of journalist Lasantha Wickremetunga. Military officers have been linked to the disappearance of journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda and the murder of journalist Lasantha Wickremetunga.
