Sampanthan vows to work towards peace

ranil-wickramasinghe-chandrika-sambanthanOpposition Leader R.Sampanthan told Parliament yesterday that they will make their maximum contribution to bring peace and harmony to the country. He made this observation joining the Committee Stage Debate on the Budget proposals for the 10th allotted day.

“We are not on the path of promoting conflict and all Sri Lankans should get together as aunited nation irrespective of their ethnicity. We strongly urge the government not to be influenced by the selfish reasons aroused by some groups to prevent the release of the prisoners taken into the custody under the Terrorism Prevention Act and take the courage to solve this issue.” said the Opposition Leader. He also said that the people in the Northern and Eastern Provinces are totally marginalized andsidelined. They suffered a lot due to the war and now they want to live in this country with self respect and dignity.

“During 1988 and 89 there was a youth uprising against the government and they even took up arms against the government. But those who were taken into custody had been released.

During President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s regime thousands of persons who fought with the LTTE against the government were released. So the present government should not hesitate to release the suspects who were detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

He also questioned as to the legal proceedings being carried out on the prisoners taken into custody under the Prevention of Terrorism Act which is to be repealed soon.
