EPRLF leader Suresh Premachandran claims that Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera is not providing the answer to his allegation that secret detention camps did exist in the North and East where hundreds of Tamils were detained.
“The Foreign Minister has told the media that the government will take tough action if it can be proved that secret detention camps exist in the country, but this is not the answer to the question raised by the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances and me,” the former militant turned politician told The Island.
“I have revealed the existence of at least two secret detention camps at Varani and Trincomalee but Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Law and Order Minister at that time, John Amaratunga denied their existence. But, now, it is public knowledge that there was one at Trincomalee. What happened to around 700 people who were detained there?” the former Parliamentarian queried.
Premachandran said he had also got information that a secret detention camp existed at Varani and even had photographs of the place.
“Before appealing to the public to inform the government of existing secret detention camps, the government must probe such camps which existed just before they came to power and find out the fate of the Tamils who were detained there,” the EPRLF leader said, stressing that it was only then the international community would believe that the government was genuinely interested in national reconciliation.
It is rumered that Hundreds of Tamil leaders who were kept in these camps were killed soon after Presidential election and the New government leaders were aware of these killing but are keeping quit as the victims were all Tamils. It seems that the New President Maithiri and PM Ranil are following the same Racist policies of the former President Mahinda.
