He said that former President Rajapaksa claimed that if he (Maithripala) became the President of the country, he (Mahinda) would be send to the electric chair over alleged war crimes. “But my government was able to save him from being sent to the electric chair,” President Sirisena said addressing an event in Welikanda, Polonnaruwa today.
Prime Minister Ranil says ”I saved Mahinda from the electric chair”
On 2nd October 2015 Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe claimed to have saved former president Mahinda Rajapaksa from going to the electric chair and averted an international probe into violations of international humanitarian law. Speaking at a ceremony organized by the National Movement for Peace in Colombo on Friday 2nd October, Mr Wickremesinghe said:
“I saved Mahinda Rajapaksa from the electric chair as well as avoiding an international inquiry.”
“It was the former President who promised UN General Secretary Ban Ki-moon and USA to allow an international probe into alleged war crimes”.
We saved MR from being taken to the ‘electric chair’ – Mangala
Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera says that it was the present government who saved Mahinda Rajapaksa from being taken to the ‘electric chair’.
‘However, we need to clarify, with the statute of Rome, no Sri Lankan can be taken to Hague. We are committed to safeguard our people and address issues faced by minorities within a unitary Sri Lanka,’ he said. The minister was speaking during a media briefing in Colombo (17th September 2015).
Mangala and Wijeyadasa saved MR from electric chair – Prime Minister
Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera and Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe saved former President Mahinda Rajapaksa from the “electric chair”, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe quipped at the UNP Working Committee meeting last evening.
“Maybe because they too hail from the Southern Province, like Rajapaksa,” a jovial Prime Minister told the UNP Working Committee members who attended the second Working Committee meeting after the Parliamentary election.
Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa accused his local political enemies on many stages that they are trying to take him to the electric chair. President Rajapaksa has offered to even sit on an electric chair rather than betray the troops who brought victory and global fame to his government.
On the other hand, Former Army Commander and Democratic Party LeaderSarath Fonseka said that if there are war crimes allegations against the Sri Lankan Army and somebody goes to the electric chair, it would be him.
Then the opposition leader and Leader of the United National Party Ranil Wickremesinghe started firing his part too in this saga. He said, “the President, any military personnel or a war hero cannot be summoned before the International Criminal Court and I have taken measures to prevent it.
