National Integration and Reconciliation State Minister A. H. M. Fowzie said that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s political life was destroyed after he brought the 18th Amendment.
All former Presidents retired after their second term. but, former President Rajapaksa got the 18th amendment passed to remain in the power for a third term. He(Rajapaksa) held the view that he should be the President for life. But the people rejected this. Minister Fowzie made these observations addressing the media on the current situation of the country, in Colombo yesterday.
“My self and several other senior SLFP members were appointed as senior Ministers during the former regime and we were fed up. MP Faiszer Musthapha was brought down to Colombo Central to undermine me and the former President gave him all the facilities. But in the last week of the Presidential election campaign Musthapha defected to the other side knowing that the defeat of Rajapaksa t was an imminent.
“We also knew that the former President would be defeated due to the lack of support of the minorities. Several senior politicians also predicted that he would be defeated due to loss of minority votes.
Most of senior SLFP members had decided to retire from politics when present President Maithripala Sirisena came to power.
