Nava Sama Samaja Party Leader Dr. Wickramabahu Karunaratne is certain that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s name to be among three other names of Sri Lankans featured in the Panama Papers revelations, the publication by a coalition of media outlets of an investigation into offshore financial dealings by the rich and famous.
“The foreign funds received by the former government for the development of the country were misplaced during the past regime. I am certain that Mahinda Rajapaksa had invested this black money in Mossack Fonseca, to turn them into white money. However Rajapaksa is in hot water as these three names will soon be revealed to the country,” he stressed.
He said the propaganda carried out by the “Pevidi Balaya” organisation claiming that the present government was suppressing bhikkus is baseless.
“Ven. Uduwe Dhammaloka Thera was imprisoned as he kept an elephant without a registration. Even a mother is not allowed to keep her own child without a proper registration. There are a set of rules and regulations that every citizen has to abide by . The government has the authority to punish anybody who acts against these set of laws without considering their status,” he added.
Dr. Karunaratne said there was no authenticity in the charges made by certain parties claiming that the security of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa had been reduced.
He said if 100 commandos are deployed for Rajapaksa’s security, this might be a threat to the security of other leaders.
“If Rajapaksa is provided with commando security there is a possibility of him appointing soldiers whom he favour. This is the sole intention of him requesting for commando security,” Karunaratne added.
