New Tamil party alliance in the offing in Sri Lanka

A new Tamil political alliance, being seen as an alternative to the main Tamil party TNA, will be formed with the participation of 10 parties representing the community, according to political sources.

A preliminary discussion about what would be called the Tamil National Front was held here today.

The leader of the oldest Tamil party, Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF), Veerasingham Anandasangaree has taken the initiative and consists of politicians from the minority who had opposed the LTTE’s separatist campaign.

The politicians include the veteran leader of the Eelam Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP) Douglas Devananda, who is currently undergoing trial by video conferencing over a shooting incident inin 1987.

The new group will be an alternative to the main Tamil party, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) – also currently the main opposition, the sources added.

Tamil groups who opposed the LTTE are not pleased with their moderate role since the military crushed the group in 2009.
