Colombo High Court Judge Manilal Waidyathilake yesterday granted permission for holding the trial in respect of the killing of parliamentarian Nadarajah Raviraj and his bodyguard sergeant Lakshman Lokuwella before a special jury.
The case is to be called again on Oct. 31, to name the members of this special jury.
The High Court Judge made the aforesaid order in response to a request by Senior Deputy Solicitor General Rohantha Abeysuriya and the Defence Counsel.
Counsel for the aggrieved party President’s Counsel K. V. Thevarasa objected to a special jury on the grounds that the accused were charged under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and the Criminal Procedure Code. However, the High Court decided that the accused and the defence had the right to ask for a special jury and granted that request.
The three accused, Gamini Seneviratne, Pradeep Chandane and Prasad Chandana Kumara, were remanded till the conclusion of this case.
Two other accused are overseas and another is missing. The evidence will be led in their absence.
