Another promise? – Rajitha assures N&E residents

Minister of Health Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, addressing the May Day Rally in Jaffna, said that the National Unity Government would fulfil all pledges it made to the people of the North and East before next year’s May Day.

Dr. Senaratne was addressing a May Day Rally, organized by the Democratic National Front, at the Sankilian Park in Nallur yesterday.

He said: “The National Unity Government is determined to solve all humanitarian problems of the people in the North and the East.

There can be delays in finding solutions for the problems, but the present government is very much concerned about the expectations of the people in the North and East. It was at this venue during the Presidential polls campaign that the pledges were made to solve the unresolved problems of the people in the North and East. So the government has not deviated its stance on addressing to the grievances of the people in the North and East.”

Referring to his early days Dr. Senaratne said that he had visited Jaffna with his father when he was a young boy of 15 years. “My father received overwhelming support from Jaffna when he contested the Medical Council election. I have great respect for the people of the North and East.”

Speaking on the issue of involuntarily disappeared persons, he said that the government would expedite the process of solving the grievances of the families of the missing persons.

He also added that the legal measures would be expedited, according to the legal system in the country, to release the political prisoners. The minister also pointed out that the Northern Provincial Council Health Minister P. Sathyalingam had handed over to him a big list of involuntarily disappeared persons and the government would do its best to solve the issue. Speaking on improving the health sector in the North Dr. Senaratne added that government was planning to build a big hospital with state-of-the-art facilities on par with that of International standards.
