Former Army Captain Tissa Wimalasena, whose name was linked to several murders committed during the Rajapaksa regime,…… ..was arrested by the FCID yesterday.
He was produced at the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court and remanded till 24 June.
He was a driver and a prominent security officer attached to the security convoy of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
He has been charged with having sold a rock, situated at the Land Reclamation Commission, claiming that it belonged to the Maga Neguma project and thereby earning a sum of Rs 10 million through its sale for his personal benefit.
An officer of the FCID told this paper that the suspect had been arrested for violating the Money Laundering Act.
“After having perused his bank accounts, it has now come to light that this suspect had used a sum of Rs 10 million for his personal benefit. There are many more who are involved in this scam. They have carried out these acts using their powers and influence,” the FCID officer said.
A CID officer when contacted said, that a probe was being conducted against the same suspect concerning some 34 tipper trucks in possession of him, who had joined the Army as a corporal.
He added that there were many similar charges which could be levelled against him for having violated the MLA.
He said a separate probe was also being conducted to verify whether there was connection of Wimalasena to the murder of Wazim Thajudeen.
