Aug 03, Colombo: Sri Lanka Police have launched an investigation to find a Lieutenant Commander of Sri Lanka Navy suspected in the murder of the Tamil National Alliance parliamentarian Nadarajah Raviraj.

The Wellampitiya Police told the Colombo Magistrate’s Court today that the wife of the Navy Lieutenant Commander Chandana Prasad Hettiarachchi, who was wanted on a warrant, has lodged a complaint with the police that her husband is missing for several months.

The Appeals Court last month issued a warrant to arrest Lieutenant Commander Chandana Prasad Hettiarachchi alias Sampath for failing to appear before the court when a case, filed by the wife of the slain MP Shashikala Raviraj against the Colombo High Court’s ruling to free the suspects of her husband’s murder, was taken up for hearing.

The Wellampitiya Police told Colombo Additional Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake that the police have commenced an investigation to find whether the missing Navy officer is hiding in some part of the island or has fled overseas.

Lieutenant Commander Chandana Prasad Hettiarachchi is one of the five suspects in the slaying of MP Raviraj nearly 11 years ago.

The Colombo High Court Judge Manilal Waidyatilleke last year acquitted all five suspects of the murder trial from all charges after a jury reached a unanimous decision that the accused cannot be convicted based only on the fact that they were identified by several witnesses in the case.

Following their release on 23 December 2016, the wife of the slain MP, Shashikala Raviraj filed a petition challenging the Colombo High Court’s judgment.

Nadarajah Raviraj was shot dead by gunmen riding a motorbike in Colombo on 10th November 2006. His bodyguard, Police Constable Lakshman Lokuwella attached to the Jaffna Police Station, was also killed in the shooting.
